As it later turned out, it was an honor killing. She had been married for a month to a man named Srikanth, who came from the same village. Although it was a loving marriage, Srikanth belonged to a lower caste, which was unacceptable to her brother. Reportedly, it brought shame and ridicule upon their entire family.
He decided to restore the family’s honor by murdering her. He waited until Nagamani left for work on her motorcycle. He then followed her in a car and, at an unexpected moment, rammed into her, knocking her off the motorcycle. Afterward, he made sure she was dead by stabbing her in the face with a knife.
