NIGERIA Woman trespassed onto private property where she attempted to steal a diesel electric generator. However, she was caught in the act by the owner, who summoned an enraged mob by shouting ‘thief.’ By the standards of Nigerian street justice, they showed her relative mercy. They whipped her with a cane and terrified her by placing tires on her – which is usually done for burning.
Although street justice may sometimes appear to be a quick and effective solution, the fact remains that it is a criminal act and a violation of human rights. Even the worst thief has the right to a fair trial and punishment according to the law. Never participate in such acts of street justice and always call the police to the scene instead.
