ISTANBUL, TURKEY – AUGUST 2, 2014 Bizarre fatal accident occurred at the Florya Metin Oktay Tesisleri football stadium in the Turkish capital. A photojournalist for the newspaper Sabah Gazetesi, 37-year-old Erkan Koyuncu, got his head stuck in the stadium’s automatic entrance gate while going to watch a Galatasaray team training session.
His neck was gripped so tightly that it cut off blood flow to his brain. He was freed only after long minutes, when he was already in critical condition. After being transported to the hospital, he unfortunately died.
After the accident, a security worker identified as F.D., who was responsible for operating the gate, was charged with negligent homicide. He received a suspended prison sentence of 2 years and 1 month. He also had to pay a fine and compensation to the victim’s family.
