RUSSIA Russian teenager, who identified as gay, could no longer endure the discrimination and bullying he faced because of his sexual orientation. In a moment of deep despair, he chose the most tragic way out and jumped to his death from a window. The incident was captured on video.
Life for LGBT people in Russia remains extremely difficult. Although homosexuality was decriminalized in 1993, LGBT rights are heavily restricted and continue to face even tighter limitations. In 2012, a law was introduced banning the so-called “propaganda of non-traditional relationships.”
Homophobia is widespread in Russian society, forcing many members of the LGBT community to live in secrecy, denying their true identity for fear of violence or social exclusion. Coming out often means risking one’s safety, job security, and personal relationships. Attacks against gay people are common, and police are not only ineffective in offering protection but often reinforce discrimination.
One of the fundamental principles of democracy is the idea that “my freedom ends where the freedom of another begins.” Gay people do not take anyone’s freedom away – the only thing they seek is the right to live openly as themselves. If you ever witness homophobic behavior, speak up and support the victim. Your action could save a life. Sadly, for this boy, it is already too late.
