PHUKET, THAILAND – DECEMBER 25, 2025 Fatal traffic accident involving Russian tourists occurred on the road connecting Kata–Saiyuan, near the Three Bays Viewpoint. A woman identified only as Polina died at the scene. Her boyfriend was thrown several feet into the air but managed to survive with serious injuries.
Polina was driving a rented Honda Click moped with her boyfriend riding as a passenger behind her. Likely due to a lack of motorcycle experience, she failed to make the turn and entered the opposite lane, where she collided head-on with a taxi pickup truck.
The case has sparked discussions about tourists riding mopeds in Thailand. Renting a moped there is very cheap and easy from a tourist’s perspective. Many tourists experience their first time riding a motorcycle there as they try to save money and feel a sense of freedom.
Small Thai islands with minimal traffic are definitely good places to learn how to handle a moped. Phuket, with its heavy traffic, certainly is not one of them. Always think rationally before making such a decision and do not overestimate your abilities.
