NEW YORK CITY, USA – SEPTEMBER 13, 2025 Around 4 a.m., a tragic incident occurred in Elmhurst, Queens, New York. 38-year-old Edwin Cruz Gomez deliberately ran over 16-year-old Jhoanny Gomez-Alvarez along with her mother and stepfather. Jhoanny died at the scene, her mother sustained a leg injury, and her stepfather suffered other unspecified injuries.

It all started in front of the Prima Donna restaurant on Roosevelt Avenue. Cruz Gomez, intoxicated, began harassing Jhoanny and her mother, making sexual propositions in exchange for money. This led to a verbal argument with her stepfather, which escalated into a physical fight. Bystanders intervened and separated the men.

To deescalate the situation, Jhoanny and her parents moved to the other side of Roosevelt Avenue. Meanwhile, Cruz Gomez got into his vehicle, a 2009 Chevrolet Suburban, and deliberately ran over all three. Jhoanny was pinned against a pole, killing her instantly. Cruz Gomez then tried to flee the scene but was quickly apprehended by the police.

A breathalyzer test showed Cruz Gomez had a blood alcohol content of 0.137%, nearly twice the legal limit. He was charged with second-degree murder, attempted murder, assault, negligent homicide, and driving under the influence. If convicted, he faces 25 years to life in prison.

Cruz Gomez is a Honduran citizen who was deported from the United States in 2005. In 2013, he was arrested for driving under the influence and in 2024 was convicted of driving without a valid license. At the time of this incident, he did not hold a driver’s license.
