NIGERIA Soldier got into a heated conflict with a local vendor at a market. He demanded a bribe from him, which the merchant was not willing to accept. The conflict escalated into a physical assault, during which the soldier attacked the vendor with a knife and his fists, causing stab and slash injuries. Fortunately, the merchant survived.
In some unstable regions of Nigeria, such as Borno, soldiers are deployed to establish checkpoints as part of the fight against terrorism. However, these soldiers often lack proper oversight, which sometimes leads to situations where they feel they have unlimited power and start collecting bribes. While bribes for passing through a checkpoint are a very common practice, extorting market vendors is less frequent.
