ANTSIRABE, MADAGASCAR – FEBRUARY 6, 2026 Three men were allegedly involved in the murder of a pregnant woman. This act was met with outrage by local residents, who took justice into their own hands before the police arrived. All three men were doused with gasoline and set on fire; none survived.
Madagascar, like other countries in Africa, faces a serious problem with vigilante justice. It stems from local customs combined with widespread distrust in the police and formal justice system, which is often seen as slow, unfair, or even corrupt. The Malagasy government has tried to implement preventive measures, but these efforts remain weak and largely symbolic.
Any form of vigilante justice is a gross violation of human rights. Even the worst criminal has the right to a fair trial and legal punishment. Anyone participating in a lynching can, under the law, commit acts more serious than the original crime. Never resort to such forms of self-administered justice and always call the police.
