IZMIR, TURKEY – SEPTEMBER 8, 2025 16-year-old high school student, whose name was released only under the initials E.B., attacked a police station in the Balçova district with a pump-action shotgun. The attack claimed the lives of two police officers.
According to all available information, E.B. first shot and killed an officer who was standing outside the station. This was followed by a shootout during which another officer, identified as Inspector Muhsin Aydemir, was fatally wounded. Two more officers were injured in the exchange – one seriously, the other lightly.
The entire gunfight ended when the attacker was shot in the leg so badly that he was no longer able to fight. A video recorded by a random witness shows exactly this moment. The attacker lies on the ground, shouting “Allahu akbar,” while police and bystanders try to gain control of the situation.
The provincial governor, Süleyman Elban, confirmed that the attacker’s weapon belonged to his father, who possessed it legally. He also confirmed that the attacker lived on the same street as the police station. According to initial reports, the attacker had no prior criminal record.
The attack was classified as terrorism, not only because of the way it was carried out, but also due to possible ties to extremist groups, specifically the Islamic State. Materials glorifying the group were found on his phone, and his social media posts suggested he was preparing to commit a suicide attack in the name of Islam.
Turkish authorities began acting with great precision, professionalism, and care. In addition to the attacker, 27 other people, including his parents, were detained. The goal of the investigation is to determine whether he planned the attack alone or if it was organized externally.
President Erdoğan expressed condolences to all the families and promised the public a thorough and fair investigation. He also emphasized the need to reconsider Turkish law, which currently grants juveniles the right to lighter criminal sentences.
