CUAUTLA, MORELOS, MEXICO – AUGUST 31, 2020 On Boulevard Libertadores in the Santa Inés neighborhood, a group of armed assailants carried out an attack on two women. They forced their gray Ford to stop and opened fire. Both women were killed at the scene. The attackers fled.
Police identified the victims as 34-year-old Elvira Viridiana, the driver, and her friend, 37-year-old Sandra, who was five months pregnant at the time of her death. Further investigation revealed that Elvira was the former wife of independent candidate Carlos Benítez Bilmart, who had often been threatened by drug cartels. She also had a past romantic relationship with Raymundo Isidro Castro, a criminal and regional leader of the Jalisco Nueva Generación (CJNG) cartel in the state of Morelos.
Both women were reportedly under state security protection, which was inexplicably withdrawn just days before the attack. Although the official police investigation results were never released, it is likely that the attack was linked to Elvira’s past.
