BENIN When a man caught a thief in his house, he decided to punish him on his own. He stripped him naked, tied him to his car, and dragged him along a muddy road. Such a punishment not only causes the thief significant pain and superficial injuries but also leads to high medical treatment costs.
In many parts of Africa, including Benin, the phenomenon of street justice is still widespread. People distrust the police and the state justice system. They feel that if they don’t punish the offender themselves, he will escape justice, which is unfortunately often true due to corruption.
However, violence and human rights violations can never be justified. Such treatment of a suspect is unacceptable anywhere in the world. Even the worst criminal has the right to a dignified and fair trial.
