KENYA Man attacked his wife with a machete during a heated argument. She tried to escape, but he caught up with her on the street and killed her with a blow to the back of her head. Shocked locals witnessed the incident and decided to take justice into their own hands – setting him on fire and burning him alive.
Although Kenya is relatively civilized by African standards, cases of vigilante justice still occur. The government tries to combat this through media campaigns and harsh penalties for anyone involved in lynching. The biggest problem remains widespread police corruption. Residents often do not trust that handing a criminal over to the authorities will result in proper punishment, believing he might simply pay a bribe and be released – which, unfortunately, is often true.
