YEMEN Video shows a semi-public execution of a man in the courtyard of a Yemeni prison. The man had been sentenced to death for murder. Onlookers were able to watch through the prison fence.
Yemen is one of the few countries in the world where the death penalty is still actively enforced. The most commonly used method is a gunshot to the head, but in cases of especially serious crimes, public hanging may be used as a deterrent – particularly in cases involving violence against children.
Murder, rape, terrorism, apostasy from Islam, adultery, and drug offenses are all crimes that can result in a death sentence by gunfire in Yemen. The practice is strongly opposed by the UN and several international human rights organizations, who argue that Yemen is known for forced confessions and unfair trials.
