PRISTINA, KOSOVO – JANUARY 31, 2005 Sixteen-year-old Serbian boy, Dimitrije Popović, was killed in a drive-by shooting. The attackers, reportedly ethnic Albanians, fired from a passing vehicle. Kosovo and UN police quickly responded, arresting two suspects and seizing weapons that may have been used in the attack. The road to the site was closed for several days while NATO and local police increased patrols. Kosovo’s president and UN officials condemned the attack, calling for the perpetrators to be brought to justice and for an end to violence.
The incident occurred within the broader context of long-standing ethnic tensions in Kosovo between Kosovar Albanians and Serbs. After the Kosovo War ended in 1999, the region remained under UN and NATO supervision to prevent further violence. The conflict stemmed from Albanian efforts for independence and resistance from the Serbian minority, leading to ongoing mistrust and violent incidents like this one.
