LITHUANIA, 2013 Case of a 19-year-old girl from Lithuania points to a dangerous trend that investigators and doctors worldwide have been struggling with in recent years. The girl decided to voluntarily end her life by ingesting a mixture of substances, where sodium nitrite played the main role. This chemical is commonly used in the food industry for meat preservation, but in high concentrations, it becomes a deadly poison that strips the body of its ability to distribute oxygen.
A combination of other substances the girl ingested also contributed to the tragedy. In addition to the aforementioned nitrite, the analysis revealed amphetamine and a moderate level of alcohol. This combination created a so-called ‘toxic cocktail’ in the body, which multiplied the effects of the poison and led to rapid failure of vital organs. Investigators at the scene found a suicide note and discovered that information on how to misuse the substance is unfortunately easily accessible on internet forums.
During the autopsy itself, doctors encountered very specific signs typical of this type of poisoning. The blood in the heart and the post-mortem lividity on the body had a peculiar chocolate-brown color, which is a direct result of the poison disabling the blood pigment. Additionally, severe brain and pulmonary edema were detected. The entire case emphasizes how important it is to tighten oversight of the online sale of these chemicals so that people in crisis cannot access them so easily.
