BANGKOK, THAILAND – SEPTEMBER 10, 2025 At the popular private Safari World Zoo, which regularly hosts guided lion feedings, a fatal attack occurred when a group of lions attacked one of the zookeepers. Witnesses reported that three lions lunged at him as he stepped out of his vehicle, dragging him to the ground and mauling him for about 15 minutes until a colleague intervened and pulled him away. Although he was immediately transported to a hospital, he ultimately died from the severity of his injuries.

The zookeeper was identified as 58-year-old Jian Rangkharasamee. He had over 20 years of experience caring for lions and tigers. According to the Thai News Agency, he violated safety protocols by stepping out of the vehicle. His role was reportedly only to drive the pickup and guide the animals within their designated areas.

Following the incident, wildlife protection teams were sent to the zoo to review the legality of lion keeping and evaluate enclosure security. Safari World expressed their deepest condolences to his family and noted that in their 40 years of operation, no similar incident had ever occurred. They emphasized that all their animals are monitored by experts.

The Wildlife Friends Foundation also commented, stating that to their knowledge, Safari World always adhered to standard international practices for lion care. However, even with strict standards, tragedies can happen because these are wild animals with natural hunting instincts. They also highlighted the risks of keeping lions in private cafés and amusement parks, describing such situations as “tragedies waiting to happen.”
