VASAI-VIRAR, MAHARASHTRA, INDIA – NOVEMBER, 2025 On November 8, 2025, a teacher punished a 6th-grade student at Shri Hanumant Vidya Mandir with harsh physical discipline for arriving late to school. The 13-year-old schoolgirl was forced to do 100 sit-ups with a heavy backpack on her back, even though the teacher was aware of her health complications.
Shortly after performing the punishment, the girl began to experience back pain and felt weak. Suddenly, she lost consciousness and collapsed in the school hallway. She was hospitalized at JJ Hospital in Mumbai, where she unfortunately died on November 14, 2025.
The girl’s body underwent a judicial autopsy, which revealed anemia, a condition in which the body lacks enough healthy red blood cells, putting strain on the organs. The cause of death was reported as pulmonary edema and an enlarged spleen.
The teacher is currently facing charges of culpable homicide. The city authorities and the school inspection department have also become involved in the investigation.
