KULGAM DISTRICT, JAMMU AND KASHMIR, INDIA – DECEMBER 19, 2024 Gunfight occurred between Indian security forces and militants, resulting in the death of five militants, including a high-ranking commander of the Hizbul Mujahideen group.
The operation was launched based on intelligence about the presence of armed militants in a village in the southern part of Kulgam district. During the raid, an intense exchange of fire took place, resulting in injuries to two Indian Army soldiers.
The militants killed in the operation were identified as Farooq Nalli (a top commander), Mushtaq Itoo, Adil Hazam, Irfan Ah Lone, and Yassir Ah Bhat. Farooq Nalli was a senior leader of the Hizbul Mujahideen and had been active in militant operations for years.
Hizbul Mujahideen is one of the most active militant groups in the region, aiming to separate Kashmir from India. India accuses Pakistan of supporting these groups, an allegation that Pakistan denies. The conflict in Kashmir has been ongoing since 1989, claiming tens of thousands of lives, including civilians, militants, and government forces.
This incident highlights the ongoing tension and violence in the region, which has long been a point of contention between India and Pakistan.
