Indian man fatally run over by autonomous vehicle

AVINASHI, TAMIL NADU, INDIA – AUGUST 14, 2025 The man was betrayed by the autonomous functions of his new Tata Harrier EV. One of the many features of this vehicle allows the driver to summon it, making the car drive slowly toward them. However, this function either activated on its own or was accidentally triggered by him, and the vehicle suddenly began to reverse just as he tried to open the door and get into the driver’s seat. He was pulled to the ground, suffering a serious head injury in the fall, and the vehicle also ran over his legs.

He was transported to the hospital, where doctors declared him brain-dead. Following the incident, the victim’s family is considering filing criminal charges against Tata Motors.

Some speculation suggests that the accident may have been caused by a defective unit. Reports claim he had already experienced several malfunctions with the car. At one point, the vehicle allegedly stopped on the road by itself and could not be restarted until the software was reinstalled.

The video has already reached Tata Motors representatives, who issued the following statement:
“We were informed of the tragic accident and are deeply saddened by this loss. Our thoughts, prayers, and sincere support are with the bereaved family. We are currently gathering all relevant facts.
Preliminary observations of the video shared online/on social media suggest that the vehicle may have been rolling downhill due to gravity and bounced back after hitting an unknown object, indicating that the motor was not engaged. The vehicle remains with the family and has been used since the incident, and we have not yet had the opportunity to inspect it.”
