TIPITAPA, MANAGUA, NICARAGUA – AUGUST 17, 2025 Carlos Eduardo Sánchez, 30, and his cousin, Yelfrin Arroliga, 43, were brutally attacked by an assailant with a machete. The crime took place in the evening hours in the San Juan de la Plywood community.
Carlos suffered severe injuries to his back and head, which caused him to die on the spot before emergency services could arrive. Yelfrin, while trying to defend herself, had her entire hand cut off and also suffered a deep slash wound to her face.
Although Yelfrin was hospitalized in critical condition, all reports indicate that she has now been stabilized. She had to undergo several surgeries.
After the attack, the assailant fled the scene, but thanks to witness testimony and quick police work, he was soon apprehended. He was identified as Orlando Espino Soza, 36, Yelfrin’s former partner. According to preliminary information, his motive was jealousy. His aggression was triggered when he saw Yelfrin accompanied by another man. Without knowing that it was her cousin, or even asking, he began attacking blindly.
Organizations defending women’s rights in the country have since strongly emphasized that such acts are not personal conflicts and should not be excused. People are not objects to be owned. And regardless of anything else, no one has the right to take another person’s life. They hope the perpetrator will be charged with attempted femicide and serious bodily harm.
