PRADERA, VALLE DEL CAUCA, COLOMBIA – SEPTEMBER 9, 2025 José Dorién Jiménez, the Secretary of Government of Pradera, was assassinated by a hitman while watching the Colombia vs. Venezuela soccer match in the town’s main park. The assailant, arriving on a motorcycle, fired multiple shots at close range, fatally wounding Jiménez. Two other individuals were also injured in the attack.
Jiménez, a member of the Conservative Party, had previously served as a councilman and was known for his active role in combating micro-trafficking and supporting land restitution initiatives in the region. His efforts had made him a target for criminal organizations operating in the area. The region is known for its strategic location, serving as a corridor for illegal armed groups, including dissident factions of the FARC. These groups have been involved in various illicit activities, contributing to the escalating violence in the department.
The assassination of Jiménez has highlighted the ongoing security challenges in southern Valle del Cauca. Local authorities, including Governor Dilian Francisca Toro, have condemned the attack and pledged to intensify efforts to combat organized crime. A reward of up to 100 million pesos has been offered for information leading to the capture of the perpetrator. The Defensoría del Pueblo had previously issued an early warning about the potential escalation of violence in the region, citing the presence of illegal armed groups and their impact on local communities.
This incident underscores the perilous conditions faced by public officials and community leaders in areas affected by organized crime. It also calls attention to the need for comprehensive strategies to address the root causes of violence and to protect those working towards peace and justice in Colombia.
