ATOYAC, VERACRUZ, MEXICO – OCTOBER 6, 2025 35-year-old Jessica Luna Aguilera was assassinated by a group of armed men while she was picking up her children from school. They blocked her path so she could not continue driving and shot her directly inside her car. They then fled the scene. Her car, moving on its own, crashed into the wall of Benito Juárez School, where she had been heading.

When rescuers arrived, there was nothing they could do but confirm her death. The police launched an intensive investigation to determine the motive and apprehend the perpetrators of the murder.
Although not officially confirmed, the motive was likely political. Jessica Luna Aguilera was politically active and a regionally influential figure. She had previously run for the mayor of Yanga and was currently working as a peace judge. She had reportedly been targeted in previous assassination attempts.
