Indian woman killed by huge crocodile

JAJPUR, ODISHA, INDIA – OCTOBER 7, 2025 57-year-old resident of the village of Kantia, Soudamini Mahala, was attacked by a giant crocodile while bathing in the Kharasrota River. The crocodile dragged her under the water and killed her within a few moments. It then carried her body away to an unknown location. The police, in cooperation with local residents, are still searching for it.

In the Odisha region, there are two species of crocodiles: the Saltwater crocodile (Crocodylus porosus) and the Marsh crocodile (Crocodylus palustris). Both are potentially dangerous to humans. The Saltwater crocodile tends to be aggressive and territorial, while the Marsh crocodile attacks humans only when surprised or extremely hungry.

In areas where crocodiles live, it is recommended to completely avoid bathing in rivers, lakes, and lagoons. Ideally, one should stay at least 30 feet (10 meters) from the water’s edge, where crocodiles may be lurking. If for some reason you must enter crocodile territory, it is recommended to do so in a large group, as crocodiles often attack solitary individuals.

If prevention fails and you are attacked by a crocodile, it is advised to fight with all your strength and try to hit its sensitive areas, such as the nose, eyes, or ears.
