Fast driving of shared taxi ended in tragedy

ZIMBABWE In Zimbabwe, vehicles known as mushika shika operate. They are illegal but very common means of mass transport – shared taxis. Their drivers usually use cheap Japanese cars, packed with up to seven passengers. Payment is in cash, these vehicles are often in poor technical condition, and the drivers have no license.

To earn enough money, mushika shika drivers often have to drive fast to save time. This proved fatal in this case. Due to high speed and possibly the poor condition of the vehicle, the driver lost control and crashed, resulting in several deaths and multiple serious injuries.

In third-world countries, unusual vehicles are often used for mass transport, which often do not meet basic safety standards. A well-known example is the tuk-tuk. When abroad, it is recommended to use only licensed taxis or other safe means of public transportation.
