Bombing of Dresden

DRESDEN, GERMANY – FEBRUARY, 1945 On the night of February 13–14, 1945, the German city of Dresden was heavily bombed by the Allied air forces – the British Royal Air Force (RAF) and the American United States Army Air Forces (USAAF). The attacks officially targeted industrial and transportation sites, including railway hubs and military depots, but the scale and intensity of the bombing caused massive destruction in civilian areas.

The raids created enormous firestorms that quickly merged into a deadly inferno. Temperatures at the center were so high that many people inside buildings were killed instantly. Historians estimate the death toll at 25,000 to 35,000 civilians, making Dresden one of the deadliest air raids on a European city during World War II.

At the time, Dresden was not a significant military center, which has led to controversy and debate about the ethics of the Allied bombing. Some historians argue the goal was to break German morale in the final months of the war, while others consider it a war crime against civilians.

Interestingly, Dresden was known as a cultural city before the bombing, famous for its baroque architecture, art, and historic landmarks. More than 13,000 buildings were destroyed, including historic palaces, churches, and cultural institutions. In the postwar period, much of the city center was rebuilt, with the most famous reconstructions being the Frauenkirche and the Zwinger Palace.

The bombing of Dresden remains a symbol of the horrors and controversies of aerial warfare, highlighting the devastating impact of modern air raids on civilians and continuing to provoke historical debate today.
