KURTALAN, SIIRT, TURKEY – JUNE 6, 2025 Wedding celebration turned into a tragedy that shook the entire local community and all of Turkey. Nineteen-year-old Adnan Pekgöz was shot during the traditional “halay” dance by his peer, 19-year-old Aziz Asma.
As shown in security camera footage, Asma attacked his victim from behind without warning and killed him with several shots. He then began threatening other wedding guests with the weapon and fled the hall. Police soon caught him hiding at a nearby sports field and took him into custody.
During the court trial, Asma tried to defend himself by claiming the act had not been planned. He allegedly brought the weapon to the wedding with the intention of celebratory shooting into the air – which is illegal but still a fairly common tradition in these parts of the world. He further claimed that a dispute had occurred between him and Pekgöz, during which he was out of control and only meant to shoot him in the leg to protect himself.
The court did not believe his version. Based on CCTV footage and witness testimony, intent was proven. He was sentenced to life imprisonment.
