IRAN – DECEMBER 8, 2025 Footage shows the execution of a death sentence in public. The convict was brought to a mobile gallows made from a crane, where he was hanged in front of citizens. This is an officially carried out execution by the Iranian judicial system.
The Iranian government believes that public executions have a deterrent effect. It is estimated that around 1,000 executions are carried out there each year. The death penalty is commonly used for a range of crimes, such as murder, armed robbery, or drug offenses. Besides hanging, stoning is less commonly used. Iran has faced criticism from international human rights organizations for this.
