SYDNEY, AUSTRALIA – DECEMBER 14, 2025 Terrorist attack at Bondi Beach in Sydney occurred on December 14, 2025, and quickly became one of the most tragic violent incidents in modern Australian history, as armed attackers opened fire on a crowd gathered for the “Chanukah by the Sea” celebration. Australian police and government authorities officially classified the event as a terrorist act, likely motivated by antisemitic violence targeting the Jewish community.
Investigators and police sources reported that the attack was carried out by a father and son; the 50-year-old father was shot dead at the scene by police, while his 24-year-old son, identified as Naveed Akram, was seriously wounded and taken into custody. The assailants caused panic and chaos, firing from a bridge and surrounding areas at attendees of the celebration, which drew hundreds to thousands of people.

The death toll is high – at least 15 to 16 people of various ages, including a 10-year-old girl, were killed, and dozens more were injured and hospitalized. Among the victims were civilians, elderly people, a rabbi, and foreign nationals.
Amid the panic, a remarkable act of bravery emerged from a local Sydney resident. Ahmed al-Ahmed, a 43-year-old fruit stall owner and father of two, risked his life by rushing at one of the gunmen unarmed. Video footage shows him managing to subdue and disarm the shooter with his bare hands, likely saving many lives before police intervened. Ahmed was hit by two bullets during his heroic action and is now hospitalized. His courage has been widely praised by Australian authorities and the public as an extraordinary display of bravery and selflessness.
Improvised explosive devices were also found at the scene, and police are searching nearby areas and the suspects’ homes to determine whether a wider extremist network was involved. Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and security officials strongly condemned the attack and called for societal unity against hate and extremism.
