MEXICO CITY, MEXICO – MAY 20, 2025 On the busy Calzada de Tlalpan, at the intersection with Napoleón Street in the Moderna neighborhood of the Benito Juárez borough, a government vehicle was attacked. Inside were Ximena Guzmán Cuevas, secretary to the city’s prime minister, and her advisor José Muñoz Vega. No one of them did not survive.

The double assassination occurred around 7 a.m. The armed assailant waited at the usual Vega’s pick-up spot. Once both were within range, he opened fire at close range without warning. He then fled the scene on a motorcycle with an accomplice. 9mm shell casings were found at the location.

Investigators are working under the assumption that this was a direct, targeted attack on specific individuals. The exact motive remains unknown. The attack has triggered a series of arrests – over 10 suspects have been detained, and some have been confirmed to have participated in planning the attack. The search for the perpetrators continues. President Claudia Sheinbaum assured the public that the federal government is providing full support for the investigation and that those responsible will not escape justice.
