HRABOVE, DONETSK OBLAST, UKRAINE – JULY 17, 2014 Malaysia Airlines flight MH17, a Boeing 777, was flying from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur. There were 298 people on board, mostly civilians, including many children. The flight was over eastern Ukraine, where an armed conflict was ongoing between the Ukrainian army and pro-Russian separatists.
Near the village of Hrabove, the plane was struck by a Buk surface-to-air missile and broke apart in midair. All passengers and crew were killed. Debris was scattered over a wide area, turning the site into a scene of both humanitarian and investigative operations.
An investigation led by the Dutch Safety Board, together with international partners, concluded that the plane was shot down by a Buk missile brought from Russia and returned there after the attack. The international community, including the UN and the EU, condemned the incident as a tragedy and a violation of international law.
The MH17 crash became one of the most widely reported attacks on a civilian aircraft in modern history and significantly affected relations between Russia, Ukraine, and Western countries.
