SU-NGAI PADI, NARATHIWAT, THAILAND – AUGUST 15, 2022 Series of bomb attacks targeted both civilians and security forces. The incident began in a rubber plantation, where a fifty-five-year-old worker stepped on a planted mine, which caused devastating leg injuries.
After army and police units along with bomb disposal experts (EOD) arrived at the scene, the attackers detonated a second explosive hidden nearby. This subsequent blast killed one soldier and seriously injured several police officers, including the deputy commander of the local department. Specialists subsequently found and disposed of a third bomb in the area.
This tactic, where the first explosion serves as bait to lure rescue forces into another trap, is a typical manifestation of the long-standing separatist conflict in southern Thailand, where Muslim rebel groups fight for autonomy from the Thailand.
