CONGO When the criminal was caught, the local community took the law into their own hands. Instead of calling the police, they doused him with flammable liquid and burned him alive.
In Africa, as well as on other continents, lynching thieves and taking justice into one’s own hands is still deeply rooted in the population. It stems from distrust in the state justice system, low education, and corruption. Such behavior, however, is a serious violation of human rights anywhere in the world – even the worst criminal has the right to a fair trial and punishment according to the law. If you ever find yourself in a similar situation, always call the police.
