GUARUJÁ, SÃO PAULO, BRAZIL, 2009 35-year-old tourist from Portugal who was spending her vacation in the coastal area near Guarujá, Brazil, became the victim of a murder shortly before she was scheduled to return home. The woman, identified as Isabella R. in the available information, had rented a small beach house during her stay.
On the beach, she met a 20-year-old local man named Roberto S., who was involved in athletics and bodybuilding. The two subsequently spent several days together, and according to available information, the young man stayed with her practically nonstop.
On the sixth day of their time together, Roberto offered to prepare cocktails at the rented house. Once he got inside, investigators say he began searching through the woman’s personal belongings. He knew that Isabella had cash, jewelry, credit cards, and other valuables with her. Because she was scheduled to travel to Portugal later that same evening, he assumed she would not notice any theft until she returned home.
However, Isabella returned to the house shortly afterward. After swimming, she went inside and noticed Roberto searching through her belongings. When she confronted him and threatened to call the police, the young man reportedly panicked. He grabbed a flashlight and struck the woman in the head. After she fell to the ground, he attacked her and strangled her to death. He then took her money, jewelry, credit cards, and other valuables and fled the scene.
Isabella’s body was later discovered by a cleaner who entered the rented house and found the woman lying lifeless on the floor. Police were called to the scene and launched an investigation.
