LEBANON – OCTOBER 13, 2023 In southern Lebanon, 37-year-old Lebanese video journalist Issam Abdallah was killed while doing his job. He was filming the situation near the border between Israel and Lebanon for the Reuters agency in connection with escalating fighting between the Israel Defense Forces and Hezbollah.
Abdallah and other colleagues from Reuters, AFP, and Al Jazeera were positioned on elevated ground near the village of Aalma ech Chaab, where they were observing and filming cross-border shelling. They were wearing clearly marked vests and helmets with the word “Press” on them.
According to subsequent investigations, an Israeli tank fired two 120 mm shells toward the location where the group was. The first round hit Issam Abdallah and killed him on the spot, while the second shot severely damaged the colleagues’ vehicle and injured several other journalists.
The organization Reporters Without Borders (RSF) and the UN later stated that in previously recorded footage, the journalists were clearly visible as civilians and that the attack violated international humanitarian law.
