Fatal shooting of Morris Anthony Davis

OAKLEAF PLANTATION, FLORIDA, USA – MAY 9, 2026 In northern Florida, a dramatic and ultimately tragic event occurred in which 48-year-old Morris Anthony Davis – a man wanted for a 2013 murder in Mississippi – died after being shot by police.

Police arrived at the scene to assist Florida’s Department of Children and Families during a routine check. During this visit, it was revealed that Davis had an active interstate warrant due to charges of murder and assault, for which he had not previously been arrested.

The situation happened when Davis stood up against the responders and armed himself with two knives. According to the investigation, he became confrontational and did not respond to the commands of the response teams. Police attempted to disarm him and used a Taser several times in an attempt to de-escalate the situation, but these attempts were unsuccessful.

According to recordings from the scene of the incident, Davis can be heard repeatedly shouting that he would rather die than go back to prison, and asking officers to shoot him. The situation then escalated to the point when one of the responding deputies fired his weapon, causing Davis to suffer a fatal injury.

This death sparked discussions and controversy in the community and among activists, because some relatives and observers claim that Davis was no longer physically capable of posing an immediate threat at the moment he was on the ground and several meters away from the police, and they question whether it was necessary to use deadly force.
