TEHRAN, IRAN At the turn of 2025 and 2026, massive anti-government protests broke out across Iran. They were caused by a combination of an economic crisis, the collapse in the value of the Iranian currency, inflation, and the long-term dissatisfaction of citizens with the regime.
The Iranian regime responded with a harsh crackdown and even disconnected the entire country from the internet to prevent protesters from organizing and to stop information about its repression from reaching the outside world. Amnesty International described the protests as a massacre. UN Special Rapporteur Mai Sato spoke of 5,000 victims. However, some estimates are as much as four times higher.
It has been documented that Iranian government security forces used live ammunition against protesters during these demonstrations. Protesters mysteriously disappeared and were arrested without any trials or formal charges. People identified as organizers were mercilessly executed.
Video shows the final moments of the life of one of the participants in these protests. He was shot in the head by state security forces in Tehran’s Fardis district.
