Before the attack, Rodger published a video and distributed an extensive manifesto in which he described his anger toward women and men whom he believed were successful in romantic relationships. He referred to the attack as his “Day of Retribution.” His motivation was a combination of feelings of social isolation, hatred toward women, frustration over rejection, and extremist views that are now often associated with the so-called incel subculture.
