TEPALCATEPEC, MICHOACÁN, MEXICO – JANUARY 10, 2020 Maria Guadalupe Lopez Esquivel, known by the nickname “La Catrin”, was one of the highest-ranking women in the CJNG cartel, one of the most brutal drug cartels in Mexico. According to Mexican authorities, she held a command role in the state of Michoacán, where she coordinated armed cartel members and participated in the organization’s operations. She was considered a very influential and dangerous person, partly due to her connections to the cartel’s top leadership.
She died during a large-scale raid carried out in Michoacán by the Mexican Army, the National Guard of Mexico, and state police. Security forces stormed a hideout where she was located with other CJNG gunmen, and during the firefight she was shot in the neck. She suffered critical injuries and died shortly afterward in the hospital. She was 21 years old at the time of her death.
