EUNAPOLIS, BAHIA, BRAZIL – FEBRUARY 20, 2025 50-year-old woman suffered serious injuries after being attacked by her own dog – a mixed breed of Labrador Retriever and Rottweiler. The animal scalped part of the skin on her head and tore apart her right arm. The attack was stopped only with a piece of pipe, which can be seen in the photographs.
After the attack, the victim was hospitalized at Hospital Regional de Eunapolis, where she had to undergo a complex emergency surgery. It lasted several hours.
The victim’s nephew, who witnessed the attack, described to Brazilian media the circumstances under which it happened. He stated that the dog attacked while the woman was cleaning the refrigerator and taking out brine that had leaked from meat. The dog approached to lick it. When the woman tried to shoo it away, it interpreted the situation as a fight over food.
Similar behavior in dogs is called Resource Guarding – the dog protects something it considers valuable, whether it is food, a toy, or its favorite person. To prevent similar situations, it is recommended to get the dog used to the owner’s presence during feeding from puppyhood. A finger placed in the bowl works very well.
