Funeral of Meo Zedong

BEIJING, CHINA – SEPTEMBER, 1976 Mao Zedong was a Chinese revolutionary, politician, and leader of the Communist Party of China who profoundly influenced the history of China in the 20th century. He was born on December 26, 1893, in Hunan Province into the family of a wealthy farmer. As a young man, he became involved in the revolutionary movement, and after the founding of the Communist Party of China in 1921, he quickly rose to become one of its most prominent leaders. After a long civil war, the communists defeated the nationalists, and on October 1, 1949, Mao proclaimed the establishment of the People’s Republic of China, of which he became the leader.

Under his leadership, the country underwent sweeping changes. A land reform was carried out in which land was confiscated from large landowners and redistributed to peasants. In the following years, however, Mao introduced the collectivization of agriculture and the nationalization of industry, transforming China into a centralized communist state. Literacy improved, healthcare expanded, and the country began building a modern industrial base.

However, his rule was also marked by some of the greatest tragedies in modern history. Between 1958 and 1962, Mao launched the campaign known as the Great Leap Forward, which aimed to rapidly transform China into an industrial superpower. The experiment ended in disaster. Flawed economic policies, unrealistic production targets, and forced agricultural reforms led to a massive famine. Historians estimate that approximately 15 to 45 million people died as a result.

Another dramatic chapter was the Cultural Revolution, which Mao launched in 1966 to strengthen his power and eliminate real and perceived opponents. Millions of people were publicly humiliated, imprisoned, or sent to labor camps. Historical monuments, temples, and cultural heritage were destroyed, while teachers, scientists, artists, and other educated individuals were persecuted. Estimates of the death toll range from hundreds of thousands to several million.

Mao Zedong died on September 9, 1976, in Beijing at the age of 82. During the final years of his life, he suffered from numerous health problems, including heart disease, lung disorders, and the effects of several heart attacks. His health gradually deteriorated, and according to official reports, the immediate cause of death was a heart attack and complications associated with his chronic illnesses.

Following his death, a period of national mourning was declared throughout China. His body was embalmed and placed on public display so that hundreds of thousands of people could pay their respects. Although Mao reportedly expressed a wish to be cremated during his lifetime, the Chinese leadership decided otherwise. His remains were placed in the Mao Zedong Memorial Hall in Tiananmen Square, where they remain on display in a glass sarcophagus to this day. The memorial is visited by millions of people every year, and Mao Zedong remains one of the most significant, yet also one of the most controversial, figures in modern world history.
