Mysterious death of Church of Scientology member

CLEARWATER, FLORIDA, USA – FEBRUARY 24, 1980 Josephus A. Havenith was a 45-year-old Dutch music teacher who traveled to the U.S. state of Florida in early 1980 to attend a stay at the Fort Harrison Hotel in Clearwater. Since 1975, the historic building has served as the main spiritual headquarters and training facility of the Church of Scientology, where members from around the world come for religious courses and spiritual counseling.

Havenith stayed at the Fort Harrison Hotel for approximately two months. In February 1980, he was found dead in Room 771. He was lying in a bathtub filled with water so hot that it had caused extensive scalding, and in some areas of his body, the skin was peeling away. This unusual condition of the body immediately attracted the attention of investigators and the public.

The case became even more mysterious after the autopsy results were released. The local coroner stated that when the body was discovered, Havenith’s head was not submerged beneath the water. Nevertheless, the state medical examiner identified drowning as the most likely cause of death. To this day, it has never been satisfactorily explained how a person could have died by drowning when his head was not under the water when he was found. No evidence of foul play was made public, and the case was closed without any further criminal investigation.

Further questions were raised by what happened after Havenith’s death. His body was cremated shortly after the autopsy and transported back to the Netherlands at the expense of the Church of Scientology. The rapid cremation prevented any potential independent forensic examination, which later became a point of criticism by some former members of the Church of Scientology and journalists. However, no direct evidence has ever been presented that the cremation was intended to conceal the circumstances of his death.

Although claims frequently appear online that Josephus A. Havenith was a “victim of Scientology,” no official investigation has ever concluded that the Church of Scientology bore direct responsibility for his death. The only established fact is that he died under still unexplained circumstances while staying at its main training center, and several aspects of the case – particularly the extremely hot water, the position of the body, and the conclusion of probable drowning – continue to raise questions to this day.
