KASHMIR, INDIA – JULY 8, 2026 Zakir Ganie was killed during a security operation in a district of Kashmir. Indian authorities identified him as a member of the Islamist terrorist organization Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT). According to the Indian Army, the operation was launched based on intelligence indicating the presence of armed militants in the area. Indian security forces stated that Ganie was among those involved in armed activities in the region.
Kashmir has long been a disputed territory between India and Pakistan, with regular clashes taking place between Indian security forces and armed groups. Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) is a Pakistani Islamist terrorist organization that seeks to annex Kashmir to Pakistan. The group is designated as a terrorist organization by numerous countries and the United Nations and is responsible for a number of attacks, including the 2008 Mumbai attacks. Indian authorities have long claimed that the organization operates with support from Pakistan, a claim that Islamabad denies.
