SÃO PAULO, BRAZIL – JULY 7, 2026 Police operation took place in the Perus neighborhood in western São Paulo, Brazil, during which 36-year-old Rafael do Nascimento Gomez was shot and killed. According to police, the man was hit after he allegedly attempted to take one of the officers’ firearms during the incident.
Police were called to a residential building following a report of a possible break-in. Upon arriving at the scene, residents reportedly told officers that a suspected man was moving across rooftops, jumping between buildings, and throwing objects toward people in the area.
During the subsequent approach by police, the man allegedly attacked one of the officers and attempted to take his service weapon, according to the official version of events. Another officer then used his firearm and shot the man. The intervention was captured by body cameras worn by the responding officers.
The injured man was taken to an emergency department in the Perus area, where he later died. Police subsequently stated that the investigation found no evidence confirming the initial suspicion of theft or another criminal offense.
