DALLAS, TEXAS, USA – JULY 7, 2016 Photographs show the dead body of Micah Xavier Johnson, who opened fire on police officers in Dallas during a protest responding to the recent deaths of Alton Sterling and Philando Castile (both African Americans killed by police officers). Johnson, who was 25 years old, attacked at the end of the march and, according to investigators, deliberately ambushed the officers. Five police officers were killed in the attack, while nine other officers and two civilians were injured.

After the shooting, Johnson fled into a building and hid there for several hours. Police negotiated with him during the ensuing standoff, but Johnson refused to surrender and exchanged gunfire with officers again. Police eventually used a remotely controlled robot with a C-4 explosive placed on its arm. The robot was positioned near Johnson, and the explosive was subsequently detonated, killing him.
The victims of the shooting were Dallas Police Department officers Lorne Ahrens (48), Michael Krol (40), Michael Smith (55), and Patrick Zamarripa (32), as well as DART officer Brent Thompson (43). Johnson was a former member of the Army Reserve and served for approximately eight months in Afghanistan between 2013 and 2014.
