DURBAN, SOUTH AFRICA – AUGUST 2, 2026 43-year-old Celani Zungu died in the Adams Mission area of uMbumbulu, south of Durban in KwaZulu-Natal province, after he was struck by a water tanker belonging to the eThekwini Municipality.
The incident occurred while water deliveries using tankers were taking place in the area due to supply problems. According to available information, a situation related to water distribution was unfolding at the scene when the vehicle struck Zungu and caused fatal injuries.
The tanker driver, who was an employee of the municipality, was not arrested. The eThekwini Municipality launched its own internal investigation to clarify the circumstances of the incident and the possible responsibility of those involved. Police are investigating the case as culpable homicide.
