One Direction star dies in hotel fall

BUENOS AIRES, ARGENTINA – OCTOBER 16, 2024 British singer Liam Payne died at the age of 31 in Buenos Aires. While staying at the CasaSur Palermo hotel in the Palermo district, he fell from the balcony of his third-floor room and suffered extensive injuries that proved fatal at the scene. Emergency responders who were called to the hotel were unable to save him.

Police were called to the hotel shortly before the fall after staff reported a problem with a guest who, according to the hotel manager, was under the influence of alcohol or drugs and behaving aggressively. The subsequent investigation showed that Payne had alcohol and several drugs in his system, including cocaine. Argentine authorities said the circumstances of the fall were not consistent with suicide, and investigators believed he may have been unconscious or severely disoriented when he fell.

Payne rose to fame in 2010, when he took part in the British talent show The X Factor. Although he initially competed as a solo singer, the judges put him together with Harry Styles, Niall Horan, Louis Tomlinson, and Zayn Malik. Together, they formed the group One Direction, which became one of the most successful boy bands in the world within just a few years.

One Direction released five studio albums, and songs such as What Makes You Beautiful, Story of My Life, and Night Changes became worldwide hits. The group went on hiatus in 2016, and its individual members subsequently pursued their own careers.

Payne continued as a solo singer. In 2017, he released the hit Strip That Down, which became his most successful solo single, and in 2019 he released his only studio album, LP1. Throughout his career, he also collaborated with a number of other well-known artists.

In the final years of his life, Payne spoke openly about his struggles with alcohol and substance use. In 2023, he underwent treatment at a rehabilitation facility. Shortly before his death, he traveled around Argentina and also attended a concert by his former One Direction bandmate Niall Horan.
