Motocross rider Wey Zapata killed in race crash

SAN AGUSTÍN, CÓRDOBA PROVINCE, ARGENTINA – APRIL 4, 2021 Alberto “Wey” Zapata Bacur was a 23-year-old Argentine motocross and enduro racer from San Juan. In his country, he was known not only for his results, but also as an extraordinary example of determination. In November 2020, he suffered an amputation of his left arm in a serious car accident, yet he managed to return to racing within a few months and competed with only one arm. Shortly before his death, he even won a race in MX Patagónico Sur.

On April 4, 2021, he started in the second round of the MX Córdoba championship in San Agustín, Argentina. During the race, he went over a jump, lost control of his motorcycle after landing, and fell directly onto the racing line. Two riders following behind him were unable to react in time and both ran him over. He suffered severe injuries and was immediately taken to a hospital, but doctors were unable to save his life.
