DETROIT, MICHIGAN, USA – MAY 18, 2017 Chris Cornell was an American singer, guitarist, and songwriter who became famous primarily as the frontman of the band Soundgarden. He was one of the most prominent voices of the 1990s grunge scene. He later also performed with the supergroup Audioslave and pursued a solo career.

Throughout his life, Cornell also struggled with drug and alcohol addiction and openly spoke about his mental health problems. He underwent treatment in the past and, according to his own statements, managed to recover from his addiction.
Chris Cornell died at the age of 52, just a few hours after a Soundgarden concert in Detroit. He was found in the bathroom of his hotel room at MGM Grand Detroit. The medical examiner determined the cause of death to be hanging and ruled the death a suicide. Toxicology testing detected, among other substances, lorazepam (Ativan), but according to the medical examiner’s conclusion, these substances did not contribute to his death. His death marked the end of the career of one of the most prominent rock singers of his generation.
