PINDAMONHANGABA, SÃO PAULO, BRAZIL – AUGUST 10, 2026 23-year-old law student Lívia Berthoud was shot and killed by her ex-boyfriend, Carlos Eduardo Barbosa Vieira Leite. The attack took place in the morning after the young woman left her father’s gym.

According to police, her ex-boyfriend began following her. Lívia tried to escape from him by running down the street, but the man caught up with her and fired several shots at her. She died at the scene after being shot. Part of the attack was captured by security cameras.
An especially serious circumstance is the fact that Lívia had a protective order issued against her former partner. Her family told police that the man had allegedly threatened to kill her in the past and refused to accept the end of their relationship.
After the attack, the suspect fled to his apartment, where, according to police, he attempted suicide with a firearm. He was found injured and taken to a hospital, where he remained under police guard. Police recovered a .38-caliber revolver and other evidence at the scene.
Lívia was in her final year of law school at the University of Taubaté and also worked as a court intern. She was expected to graduate later this year. The case is being investigated as femicide.
