ISLA CRISTINA, HUELVA, SPAIN – AUGUST 16, 2026 Three people were killed in a shooting in southern Spain. The attack took place in the local El Rocío neighborhood, where two masked men on a motorcycle opened fire on a group of people. They then fled the scene, and the motorcycle was later found abandoned and set on fire.
Among the victims was a 39-year-old woman who was eight months pregnant, her 62-year-old mother, and a 16-year-old boy, who, according to available information, had nothing to do with the family or the conflict. The unborn child also died. Two other people were injured in the shooting, one of whom suffered serious injuries.
Police are investigating the case as a possible retaliatory attack between the rival Salazar and Moriña family clans, whose conflict dates back to 2024. At that time, a man known as El Baba, who was linked to the Salazar clan, allegedly shot and killed his brother-in-law from the rival Moriña clan, according to investigators. Further shootings and attacks followed, reportedly claiming additional victims according to Spanish media.
Part of the Salazar family subsequently moved to Isla Cristina, where the conflict continued. The current attack is therefore considered a possible new chapter in the dispute, although the motive has not yet been definitively confirmed and the investigation remains under judicial secrecy.
The perpetrators remain at large. Meanwhile, the Guardia Civil found weapons that investigators believe were probably used in the attack and sent them for ballistic examination. Police have also increased their presence in Isla Cristina and other areas of Huelva amid concerns about possible retaliatory attacks.
